WALT: solve multiplication problems using place value partitioning
There are 8 pencils in a box. AJ has 15 boxes of pencils.
How many pencils are there altogether?
How many pencils are there altogether?
15 x 8 = ?
10 x 8 = 80
5 x 8 = 40
80 + 40 = 120
To solve this problem, I used place value partitioning. I
multiplied 10 by 8 and I got 80 as the answer. Then,
I multiplied 5 by 8 and I got 40 as the answer. Then
I added 80 and 40 and I got 120. So AJ has 120 pencils
altogether.
