WALT: solve addition and subtraction word problems using
place value partitioning.
There were 275 sheep on Ben's farm.
He sold 167 sheep to his neighbor.
How many sheep were left on his farm?
In this problem, I will subtract 167 from 275; so
275 - 167 = ?
First, I will subtract 100 from 200: 200 - 100 = 100
Then, I will subtract 60 from 70; 70 - 60 = 10
Finally, I will subtract the ones, 5 - 7 but it is not possible because 5 is smaller than 7,
so I will add 10 to 5 to make it 15; now I can subtract 7 from 15, so 15 - 7 = 8.
Then, I will add 100 to 8: 100 + 8 = 108
So, 108 sheep will be left on Ben's farm
