Keep Your Cats Inside, Loto

Keep your Cats Inside

What I learned from this article was that cats need to be kept away from other birds . If cats are left outside they can kill all the birds they can find. They are very hungry. Cats can also kill native birds, and different kinds of animals. Cats ate 3 rabbits, 267 birds, 183 skinks, 314 mice, 8 geckos, 1 stoat 67 rats and 64 insects. I think it adds up to 907. That's a lot!.

That is why we need to keep your cats inside. They can be cute but not weak.

Accidental Plastics

Accidental Plastics
By: Kate Potter

From your toothbrush to your television, Plastic products are used nearly everywhere.  “Plastic” means it’s easy to bend or mould into different shapes. It’s difficult to imagine life without these non-natural materials compounds.

In 1863, a company selling billiard balls offered $10,000 to  any person who could come up with the best material to use and make Billiard balls. At that time the billiard balls were made from elephant tusk ivory.

There is a layer of plastic between 2 layers of glass means that, even if the windscreen cracks, all of the pieces of the glass will stay together. All of these world - changing plastics were discovered by accident.

When scientist do an experiment and when it goes wrong the scientist doesn't say that it went wrong, instead scientists are always on the lookout for new connections.

Reading Summary, Loto

Accidental Plastic By: Kate Potter

From this article I learned that windscreens contains plastic. Although it's difficult to see, the plastic is right in the middle and the glass is on the front and at the back. That's why if you crash into a pole, it just damages the window screen but does not go through. Also I learned that quite a few kinds of plastic were discovered entirely by accident. The word plastic means easy to bend or mould into different shapes. People use rubber, oil and wood, which is  mixed with chemicals to form new materials.

By reading this article I found out that thinks can be invented with plastics.  There are a few people who invented things made from plastic.

Plastic literally means easy to bend or mould into different shapes. Plastic was discovered in the mid 1800s. First a man named John Wesley Hyatt invented a celluloid in 1869. Secondly, a man named Edouard Benedictus invented a safety glass.

How he made a safety glass by hitting a flask was by  accident. He noticed that after the flask had fallen and banged on to the floor, it would stay in one place so he stayed up all night working how to make a safety glass.

And last a scientist named Alan Holloway made blue tack in 1970. unnamed.png

Making Predictions

Connected-level 3-Border Security -  It seemed like a good idea at the time. By  Browen wall

WALT:I am learning to make predictions on the text by looking at the title, subtitles and visual cues.

I  predict that this article is about keeping animals safe. The main reason why I thought that it was about this was because of the visual cues. I also predict that something scary is going to happen because some animals creep around at night. I also think this is about animals looking for food and killing other animals to eat.

Making Predictions

School Journal Part 3 Number 2 2006

Shark Day by Lani Young

WALT: I am learning to make predictions on the text by looking at the title, subtitles and the visual cues.

I predicted that this article was about some type of ceremony and sharks because in the pictures, I could see people sitting down together listening to a person speaking to them. That person looked like a leader or chief. The other picture has a shark feeding on something and some people are looking at it in surprise.

After reading the text, I found out that there was a ceremony where one of the characters became a chief.

The shark was feeding on pig guts that were thrown in the sea after the people killed a pig for the feast to welcome the new chief.

Making Predictions

Making Predictions

Connected - Level 3 - Boarder Security - It seemed like a good idea at the time by Bronwen Wall

WALT: I am learning to make predictions on the text by looking at the tittle, subtitles and the visual cues.

I predicted that this article is about....
  • Fast running animals get hungry because they run too much.
  • Rabbits arrived in New Zealand in the 1940s.
  • Rabbits and different kinds of animals getting introduced to New Zealand.
  • Ferrets, Weasels and Stoats came to New Zealand in a ship.
  • Farmers are happy because the harmful animals are dieing.
  • Ferrets got sick and passed its illness on to other ferrets on the ship.
  • Stoats ate rats and mouses.

After I read the article, I found out that.......

Between 1884 and 1886, around 4000 ferrets, 3100 weasels, and 140 stoats were set free onto New Zealand. Animals travelling by sea needed to be well fed, comfortable, and calm. Ferrets, Stoats, and Weasels all belong to the mustelid family. There are 54 species in this family, including Badgers and Otters.
